Henry Kneis’ career spans over 30 years in the alternative investment industry, where he has specialized in hedge fund investment management, structured product development, venture capital investing, equity derivatives, and arbitrage trading. As a financial services entrepreneur, he has significant experience starting and operating independent investment management entities.

Prior to co-founding Altrust Investment Solutions, Mr. Kneis was co-founder, CEO and a director of Difference Capital Financial Inc. (“DCF”), an actively managed TSX listed investment entity. DCF invested in growth companies, leveraging its capital markets expertise to help unlock the value in technology, media and healthcare companies as they approached important milestones in their business lifecycles. At its peak, DCF had $180 million in assets under management, focused primarily in late-stage venture capital investments. Mr. Kneis was also the CEO and portfolio manager of its affiliate, Difference Capital Management Inc. (“DCM”), an Ontario Securities Commission licensed investment fund manager, portfolio manager and exempt market dealer.

Prior to co-founding Difference Capital, Mr. Kneis was the Founder, CEO and Chief Investment Officer of Abria Alternative Investments Inc. where he managed three portfolios of hedge funds. Abria was the inaugural winner, in 2004, of the Canadian Investment Awards “Best Fund of Hedge Funds”. Prior to founding Abria, Mr. Kneis was the CEO of Maple Securities Ltd., a privately held, $100 million capitalized investment dealer and Toronto Stock Exchange member. He managed proprietary trading portfolios for Maple and its affiliates with aggregate balance sheet assets of $3 billion.

Mr. Kneis began his career with First Marathon Securities in 1987 and became a Senior Partner of its FM Financial Products unit in 1989. He became head of the Canadian equity arbitrage desk in 1991. From 1992 through 1996, Mr. Kneis was also responsible for supervising the New York office and its U.S. trading activities. As the second person to join FM Financial Products, Mr. Kneis had a senior management role in the development of the organization to over 200 employees across four countries with thirteen separate profit centres.  In a 1998 spin-off, this division raised permanent shareholder capital and launched with balance sheet assets of $15 billion.

Mr. Kneis has been responsible for the establishment of three Canadian investment dealers and three FINRA (formerly NASD) broker-dealers in the United States over the course of his career.  Mr. Kneis established and became CEO of a public company in 1998.  Mr. Kneis has served on various derivative and index committees of the Toronto Stock Exchange and also developed regulatory capital rules for derivative securities that were adopted as industry regulations.  Mr. Kneis is a past Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Toronto Futures Exchange, was a member of the editorial board of CanHedge, a Rogers Media publication focusing on the alternative investment fund industry in Canada, and has been a member of the Investor Risk Committee of the International Association of Financial Engineers.  Mr. Kneis is also a strong supporter of investor education in the alternative asset field. He was a founding member of the advisory board to, and an instructor of, the Certified Hedge Fund Specialist Accreditation Course, Canada’s first hedge fund accreditation program. He has also worked with the Canadian Securities Institute to help improve and deliver its hedge fund course.

Mr. Kneis graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science (BASc) and received his MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University.  Mr. Kneis also holds the ICD.D in Corporate Board Governance from the Institute of Corporate Directors. The Directors Education Program was delivered in association with the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.
